Qualifications
The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) now includes coverage for people exposed to radioactive contamination from Manhattan Project waste sites.
To qualify, an applicant must meet two main requirements:
- Residency Requirement
You must have lived, worked, or attended school for at least two years after January 1, 1949 in one of the eligible communities. Covered areas include:
- Missouri (Florissant, Hazelwood, Berkeley, St. Louis, and surrounding areas)

- Medical Requirement
Covered illnesses include:
- Any leukemia (if exposure began after age 20)
- Multiple myeloma
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas
Primary cancers of the thyroid, breast (male or female), esophagus, stomach, pharynx, small intestine, pancreas, bile ducts, gallbladder, salivary gland, bladder, brain, colon, ovary, bone, kidney, or liver (with certain exceptions)
Compensation
- If the individual is living at the time of filing: the greater of $50,000 or all unreimbursed medical expenses related to the illness.
- If the individual is deceased: $25,000 to the surviving spouse, or divided equally among surviving children if no spouse is living.
