DOWNWINDERS

From the 1940s to the 1960s, the U.S. Government conducted hundreds of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests in the Southwestern United States and on islands in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

The U.S. Government has created the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) in order to provide compensation to individuals who have contracted certain types of cancer or leukemia as a result of their exposure to radiation during atmospheric nuclear weapons tests or during employment in the uranium mining industry, as well as to the surviving family members of individuals who have passed away under these circumstances. Individuals who lived downwind of the test sites and have since contracted a radiation-related illness may receive a $50,000 settlement. Furthermore, the surviving family members of deceased individuals who lived downwind of the test sites and suffered from a radiation-related illness may also receive a $50,000 settlement.
